El Graduado

It’s hard to believe that my younger brother, the youngest of the family, has graduated.

Location: Downtown Concord, NC

High school graduations are amongst us, and it’s a bittersweet moment for all graduates. There’s one question on everyone’s mind: what happens next? Maybe some of your friends are going off to college in the fall, others enlisting in the military,  jumping in the workforce or might probably be taking a gap year. How do you navigate into these new unchartered waters on your own? Where do you see yourself sailing to?

It’s hard to believe that my younger brother, the youngest of the family, has graduated. I can still remember the day you were brought home from the hospital. There you were at home, just a 10 lb. baby sleeping without a care in the world. Fast forward years later and you’re walking across the stage marking the start of a new journey. This journey is going to lay the foundation of your future. There will be high tides and low tides, however, that’s what life is all about. Like your graduation commencement speaker said, it’s okay to fail at things because it will only lead you to the things that will make you successful. So graduates of 2018, go out there and take on the world. Congratulations to you all!

Best wishes,

Patty

The Queen City

Charlotte, it’s also known as the Queen City.

Location: Uptown Charlotte, NC

Growing up outside of the Charlotte area has given me a completely different view of this great city. As a kid in elementary school, my teachers would often plan field trips to Discovery Place or see theaters plays in Uptown. I would also dream of the day I would one day get to work amongst the growing skyline that is now Uptown.  Fast forward years later, and my dream came true! Now as an adult, there’s no longer the fun field trips to go to, but there’s all the amazing coffee shops and restaurants around my office corner! I admit to having tried just about every place at least once. I’ve even listed a few of my favorite places below. 😉

Charlotte, it’s also known as the Queen City. It was named after German King George III’s wife Queen Charlotte during the 1760s. Just a quick fun history fact for everyone! Also, Uptown Charlotte is just another name for downtown Charlotte. However, there are two reasons why some locals refer to it as Uptown instead of downtown. The first reason, the downtown area is on a hill and some people refer to it as “going up to town”! The second reason is it sounds fancy and attracts out-of-towners. Don’t you agree!?

It’s home to the NFL Carolina Panthers, NBA Charlotte Hornets, NHL Charlotte Checkers, and Minor League Charlotte Knights teams. It’s also home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Nascar Hall of Fame located in Uptown. There is plenty to see and do so if you’re not a local, make yourself a favor and come check out the Queen City! However if you’re a local, make a quick day trip to our amazing city. 🙂

My  Favorite Spots in Uptown:

  • Not Just Coffee
  • 7th Street Market
  • Coco and the Director
  • Hazelnut Creperie
  • Latta Arcade

The Desires of Your Heart

We have to trust that he always has our best interests at heart no matter how hard it is to believe it.

Location: Concord, NC

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” -Psalms 37:4

Sometimes we have to align our desires with what God desires for our lives. This doesn’t always necessarily mean getting the desires we crave. Maybe that new promotion we were hoping for isn’t what God had in mind for us or maybe that new car isn’t what God says we need right now. However, we should search our hearts and talk to him about what exactly it is we do need. We have to trust that he always has our best interests at heart no matter how hard it is to believe it.

We all desire to be loved. Am I right? Maybe right now you’re contemplating why you aren’t married or let alone in a relationship. Perhaps God wants for you to love him and yourself before being able to love another person.

If you don’t love yourself, how can you expect that person to love you how you should be loved? And if you don’t love God, how do you expect him to bless you with a person beyond your expectations or wildest dreams? You’re a strong, independent, and loving person that will find your equal in due time.

The desires of our hearts will happen when we align with God’s desires. We long to be loved and often times forget we are loved, fully and unconditionally by God.  His love is sweeter. His love is eternal. His love is overflowing; it should always be overflowing the cups of our hearts.

C’est la musique Française!

…it transports me to a time where my love for French music grew.”

Location: Paris, France

There’s several childhood memories I cherish, however there is one in particular which took place in my Elementary school music class that I wanted to share. One day, my music teacher taught us the French version of the nursery “Are You Sleeping?”. To this day I can still sing along this very nursery and it transports me to a time where my love for French music grew. Fast forward to Senior year in high school and I’m sitting in class translating French lyrics. I didn’t quite enjoy doing so at the time, because honestly it wasn’t easy or fun. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have survived the long hours translating long, boring French texts in college without the previous experience. On a fun note, I wanted to share some of my favorite songs from very different genres! I hope you all take the time to listen to them and maybe even learn some French along the way. 🙂

Pop Folk: “Le Coeur Éléphant”and “Mes Autres” by Frero Delavega

Electronic: “Alors on Danse” and “Papaoutai” by Stromae

Rap: “Sapés Comme Jamais”  and “Tu vas me manquer” by Maitre Gims

Electropop: “Complètement Fou” and “Chimie Physique” by Yelle

Walking with God

We all have flaws; flaws that reach deep down to our core and try to break us.

“Come near to God and he will come near you.” -James 4:8

How is your walk with God today? Can you say that you talk to him daily? Or just when life gets in the way? Do you take daily walks with him? Or even sit down in front of him and have a quick cup of coffee?

No one is perfect, simply we are all perfectly imperfect. That is the true definition of Christianity. We all have flaws; flaws that reach deep down to our core and try to break us. The hardest thing to do is following God, especially when we are hurting, angry, or even happy.  Yes, happy. Why? Sometimes, we forget to praise him when everything is going well in our lives.

He wants to know all of what makes you happy, and not just the negativity surrounding you. Maybe you just got promoted, maybe you just had a breakup, or maybe you currently have a peace of mind. Regardless of what it is, God just wants you to talk to him about your day. So take that stroll in the park with him or call him up for a quick cup of coffee. Wherever it is. Just know, he’s listening. He’s always ready to listen.

So, what are you waiting for?

It’s the final month of the year. How time flew by is beyond me. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this coming month.

The surrounding atmosphere is in festive cheer and the holidays are in full swing. Thanksgiving has just passed and there’s still Christmas and New Year’s to come.

I have officially decorated my work desk space with rhinestone snowflakes, glittery Styrofoam Christmas trees and a string of glittery penguins hanging near my desk.

However, I’m slightly stressing out over the following weeks to come. Aren’t we all?

THERE’S CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. WORK DEADLINES. MORE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. APPOINTMENTS. EVEN MORE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. COLLEGE GRADUATIONS. AND THE LAST BIT OF CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. AND OF COURSE FAMILY CHRISTMAS PARTIES.

When do I catch a break? When do any of us catch a break?

Instead of focusing on the things that need to get done during this holiday season, why not put some joy to it. Why not enjoy the precious moments that make us happy.

Above all the craziness, I look forward to so much this month.
I look forward to drinking hot cocoa on really cold nights.
I look forward to going outdoor ice skating.
I look forward to catching up with old college friends.
I look forward to squeezing in a quick getaway trip to refresh myself.
I look forward to spending time with my loved ones.
Lastly, I look forward to reflecting on the true reason for this season.

December is a month to enjoy. It is after all the most wonderful time of the year.

What are you looking forward to this month?
